F&I is holding up the P&L while rates and tariffs work the other side
Back-end gross hit record first-half highs just as the Fed hints at another hike and a 50% Canadian tariff gets penciled in for 2027 — and your AI bill keeps climbing.
StoneEagle says F&I offices posted their highest first-half gross-per-vehicle averages on record, echoing JM&A's earlier read, and product penetration held steady enough to keep total profits from sliding with revenue. Meanwhile the Fed chair is signaling rates could go up again, and the White House plan to double Canadian auto tariffs to 50% on Jan. 1, 2027 lands hardest on Toyota and Honda — the exact badges that anchor most independent lots. Translation: the deal is increasingly won after the customer sits down, not on the front line. If your back-end process is still whatever the last F&I guy set up, that's the cheapest gross you're leaving on the table this quarter.
VinSolutions is shipping AI-driven CRM upgrades every two weeks, vendors are pitching AI-plus-analytics website stacks, and the trade press is now asking the real question: when a shopper's AI assistant picks the dealership, does it pick yours? Over on the DealerRefresh forums, dealers are having the less glamorous conversation — remember when this stuff was cheap? Pull the monthly tech bill and mark which line items actually produce a sold unit. The answer usually shortens the list.
Auto Remarketing's commentary argues acquisition should be run by analytics people rather than legacy car guys, because auction margin has thinned and trades and street buys behave nothing alike. Anthony Clavenna's counterpoint is a $400 million wholesale operation built by flying around with cash in a backpack and outhustling Carvana and CarMax at the curb. Both are describing the same problem from opposite ends: the lane is no longer where the money is. Whichever style fits you, the store that sources off the street at scale sets its own cost basis.
A Florida dealer got filmed with thousands in junk fees on the buyer's order the same day the FTC and 22 states sued Amazon over allegedly hidden ad surcharges — the regulatory mood on undisclosed pricing is not softening. Contrast that with Best Deal Auto Sales' Travis Baldwin, who argues an independent's real growth engine is community trust, not ad spend. Both items are worth a read side by side: one shows what the camera catches, the other shows what referrals are worth. Your out-the-door number is now a marketing document whether you like it or not.
The system that wrote this brief also runs the store.
One system for inventory, CRM, desking, F&I, recon, collections, a live wholesale network and digital vehicle brochures. Built in dealerships, not in a conference room.

The Morning Drive is free and always will be. The system that writes it desks the deal, prices the car, chases the stip and answers the lead — for independent dealers who are tired of paying franchise money for franchise software.
